With the fall/winter season approaching here are some tips on how to be more sustainable, starting in your own closet !

  1. Instead of buying more and more outfits, style the clothes you already own different ways !

The most sustainable way to shop is in your own closet. Look through old pieces you haven't worn in years and try to style them three ways, if you do not feel confident in any of those three outfits, get rid of the item. You can donate or re-sell your garments at local shelters and thrift stores. If you are not ready to let go of the item yet Pickle is a great rental platform that I've used many times, and have even created friendships from the app!

  2. DO NOT spend hundreds on a new Halloween costume you will only wear once.

Instead explore options like making your own costume, the queen of hearts is a perfect example of how you can add creativity to your costume. Dressing like characters like Wednesday Addams where their looks are fairly easy to recreate and most can do so with what is already in their closets. Look in thrift stores for garments that can be not only used for halloween costumes but also something you will wear for years to come. For example, a black corset can be used in many costumes like, black swan, whitch, vampire, pirate and more !

  3. If you must purchase something, look in the thrift/vintage stores first.

Instead of automatically going for cheap options like Zara, Temu and other fast-fasion brands, look at your local thrift shops ! There are also online platforms like Depop, The Real Real, Thread Up, Poshmark and Grailed where you can purchase/sell pre-loved garments. Second-hand pieces can add personality and uniqueness to your style. It is also such a fun activity to do with your friends !

  4. Layer Layer Layer !

Invest in timeless garments that can be layered and styled many ways. You can also add uniqueness to old clothing by adding patches, sewing on bows and other design details such as buttons.
